An important work from one of the first black women to have a play professionally produced in America: Trouble in Mind opens this weekend at the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. Wiletta Mayer is a veteran of the stage but she is not sure she has the clout to stand up to the hotshot white director and his less-than-progressive play. Alice Childress’s 1955 play – which finally premiered on Broadway in 2021 – is a funny, moving, and heartbreaking look at racism, identity, and ego in the high-stakes world of New York theatre.

Performances will be held at the BACCA Center, 149 North Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, NY, April 6th-21st.

Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress is directed by Nicole Savin and presented by EastLine Theatre in partnership with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. Costumes are by Lyn Adler-Ciorciari, assisted by Wendy Pollak Grimm. Stage management is by Michelle Savin.

The cast features Sheilah Barksdale, Brad Hamler, Howard Heller, Kate Jergensen, Isaiah Joseph, Genesis Rosado, James Santora, Harrison Vogel, and Van Whitaker.

About

We create work with an open mind.

EastLine is a non-profit theatre company creating harmonious mayhem on Long Island. We create epic theatre in intimate spaces in egalitarian ways.

Through our collaborative work we try to examine the craft through a new lens and create work that challenges both our artists and audiences alike. EastLine is committed to queering the canon, exploring modern plays, and bringing original works to the attention of our community.

We create opportunities for women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people, while providing an accepting environment for all to create in the hope that local culture will one day more accurately reflect our local community.

Our door is open, add your voice to the uproar.
